Useful memberships

A few memberships are worth having. Others only work if you use them enough. Here’s what they cost, the catch and when you’d actually come out ahead.

Choose a section

Not sure where to start? See the free memberships.

The savings below are examples after the membership fee, not promises. Only count things you’d buy anyway, at the cheapest price you could otherwise get. Extra travel, spending more to use an offer or a cheaper concession can wipe out the saving.

Free to join

Camden library membership

Free

Anyone who can complete registration at a Camden library. You don’t have to live in the borough.

Books, ebooks, audiobooks and magazines to borrow, plus digital newspapers and films. Check your own borough’s offer too.

The catch: Bring ID and proof of address to finish joining. Digital services and titles vary; popular loans can mean waiting. Physical loans can incur charges.

Expected value: a worked example

Borrow six available ebooks you would otherwise buy for £6 each during a year.

£36 better off per year (£36 saved − £0 fee).

When it pays off: The first purchase it replaces. Borrowing something you wouldn’t buy is useful, but isn’t a cash saving.

Joining, renewal & sources

No subscription fee. Library and app registration are required.

Young Barbican

Free · ages 16–29

Under-30s who want cheaper films and occasional shows.

£6 cinema tickets and other discounted events. You can book for a friend aged 16–29 too.

The catch: The £6 price is for cinema, not every show. Check the eligible performance and available allocation; both people must qualify. This isn’t the paid lounge membership.

Expected value: a worked example

Two eligible cinema visits where the same ticket would otherwise cost £15: £9 saved each time.

£18 better off per year (£18 saved − £0 fee).

When it pays off: Your first eligible discounted booking.

Joining, renewal & sources

No paid subscription. Register for a Young Barbican account.

Barclays Dance Pass

Free · ages 16–30

People who’d like to try dance without paying full theatre prices.

£10 tickets from selected allocations across Sadler’s Wells venues, with up to two per production.

The catch: Both you and your guest must be 16–30. Bring proof of age and collect tickets at least 30 minutes before the show. Allocations can sell out; offers don’t combine.

Expected value: a worked example

Two eligible tickets replacing equivalent £30 tickets: £20 saved per ticket. This assumes a pass-only order.

£40 better off per year (£40 saved − £0 fee).

When it pays off: The first show you would otherwise pay more for.

Joining, renewal & sources

No subscription fee; the pass ends at the end of the month you turn 31. Pass-only orders avoid the £3.50 transaction fee; mixed orders don’t.

DUSK

Free · legal drinking age

Adults who already go to participating pubs and bars and are comfortable linking a payment card.

Claim an eligible free drink through the app when a campaign is running near you. Spending on a linked card at participating venues can also earn points towards rewards.

The catch: You need to link a card to unlock free drinks, then show the confirmation screen at the bar. One drink per person per night; venues, drinks and times vary, and there may be no campaign in your area. Check the app before making a trip.

Expected value: a worked example

Due a fresh check. Treat the price and example as a reference; confirm the current terms before joining.

One eligible drink during a year replaces a comparable £6 drink you were already going to buy. £6 is an example, not a quoted menu price or a promised offer.

£6 better off per year (£6 saved − £0 fee).

When it pays off: The first drink you would otherwise buy at that venue. If you go out or spend more just to claim one, it may save you nothing.

Joining, renewal & sources

No subscription fee. Download the app and register; a linked payment card is needed for free drinks and points. DUSK can see qualifying card transactions at partner venues, including the amount spent.

Expected value: a worked example

Four eligible £4 tickets over a year instead of tickets you would otherwise buy at £12 each, with the same booking charges in either case.

How to judge the value

Compare the same ticket, basket or journey. The example prices are assumptions, not quotes for a particular date. Rail savings are approximate because fares are rounded. If you don’t use a paid membership, you lose the fee.

Free trials, prizes and perks you wouldn’t pay for aren’t included in the sums. Check whether a benefit is already included through work, another membership or a free scheme before paying twice. These are ordinary provider links, with no referral codes.

Need disability concessions or support? Check the Disability & benefits guide before paying for a general membership.
